History
While 22583 was new to Stagecoach Western in Scotland in 2008, it arrived in Wigan in 2016; as part of plans to remove the S/T/X and 51 plate ALX 300s. Although MAN 18.240 and 18.250 engined Enviro 300s were not uncommon across the Stagecoach fleet – Manchester was only ever home to 5 of the type (22521, 22582-3, and 6-7).
They remained at Wigan until being temporarily withdrawn for a short period during the COVID-19 pandemic. Upon return they were plucked from service one by one, with 22583 being taken off the road for several months. However, when 22521 (SF57 LUB) was withdrawn from service work, 583 made a return – making the vehicle the last MAN-chassis bus to operate in passenger service with Stagecoach Manchester.
In May 2023 the vehicle was transferred to the training fleet and became a resident of Manchester’s Hyde Road Depot.
With the remaining parts of Manchester joining the Bee Network in January 2025 the vehicle remained in training pool until being replaced by Enviro 400s mid to late 2025.
Since arrival at the group, 583 has seen heavy restoration work to return the vehicle to how it was during its tenure at Wigan. Including the cab being completely rebuilt, the removal of the instructor’s seat, and removal of tables and other modifications made to allow the vehicle to be used for training.
